Getting to Know the Food Recovery Organizations in Sacramento County

Below are introductory videos from food recovery organizations in Sacramento County, illustrating a bit about themselves and the impactful work they are accomplishing.

Daughters of Zion Enterpryz’s mission includes providing nutritious food, clothing, and diapers to underserved families throughout the Sacramento Region. They are a CFAA Microgrant, Equipment Grant, and Expansion Grant awardee who specializes in edible food recovery safety training. Recently, their Expansion Grant focused on Tier 2 food recovery and transportation logistics. 

Sunshine Food Pantry’s mission is to strengthen existing partners and develop new partners in their ongoing effort to provide nourishment for the people in their community who find themselves food insecure at any point in their life. They are a CFAA Microgrant and Equipment Grant awardee. Recently, they were awarded utility carts, Handi Movers, and platform trucks to assist with their food recovery.

Common Ground Church seeks to contribute positively to the wellness of the surrounding community in various ways, including the physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial wellness of its neighbors. They are a CFAA Equipment Grant awardee and is also part of a collaborative Expansion Grant award. The Equipment Grant will assist them with a walk-in cooler room to increase their food recovery in Sacramento and the Expansion Grant will assist with transportation logistics.

River City Food Bank alleviates hunger in Sacramento County by providing healthy, nutritious food to anyone in need. They are a CFAA Microgrant awardee and was able to recover and distribute 234,263 pounds in seven months of the grant term. The grant enabled them to acquire a pallet jack, platform scales, crowd control barriers, cooling blankets, and additional equipment to support enhanced food recovery efforts and improve operational efficiency.

Capital Compassion’s mission is to eradicate food insecurity, support homeless initiatives, assist refugees, and provide job training for special needs adults by giving dignity to every individual. They are a CFAA Microgrant, Equipment Grant, and Expansion Grant awardee who has been able to expand and begin their Tier 2 food recovery process. The Expansion Grant will assist them with a mobile People’s Choice food pantry to restore dignity by offering a culturally responsive, market-style model that allows clients to choose what best meets their needs.

Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services is dedicated to assisting those in need by alleviating their immediate pain and problems and moving them toward self-sufficiency and financial independence. They are a CFAA Expansion Grant awardee that will assist them to effectively recover and transport food from retailers, manufacturers and wholesale partners for distribution to food-insecure families across Sacramento County.

Case Studies and Stories

These microgrant case studies were performed after site visits were conducted. Organizations were asked to complete a progress report and a final report to provide information on their impact and outcomes, lessons learned, as well as the quantities of food recovered, distributed, and wasted during the grant period.
